Exira Gamma Knife, a pioneering medical facility in Katowice, Poland, has recently opened its doors to Polish citizens living abroad and international patients who may be in need of treatment for brain tumours and brain disorders.

The American Brain Tumour Association estimates there are nearly 700,000 people in the US living with a brain tumour and 70,000 new cases of primary brain tumours will be diagnosed this year. Metastatic brain cancer – or secondary tumours - are the most common brain tumours in adults. Although statistics are not readily available, it is estimated that between 100,000 and 170,000 people per year are diagnosed with metastatic brain tumours worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, between 20 and 40 percent of all cancer patients develop metastatic brain tumours, with lung and breast cancers the most common to metastasize to the brain.

Being diagnosed with a brain tumour can be a frightening and life-changing experience – not just for the patient but for family members and care-givers – and can be especially challenging if it’s a secondary cancer diagnosis. Knowing you don’t need to wait and can receive rapid, world-class, state of the art treatment and care can make a significant difference at such a difficult time.

World-class Treatment at significantly reduced cost

For several years, Polish citizens living overseas have been travelling back to Poland for medical treatment – not just for the reassurance, comfort and security of being treated in their home country - but because they know the costs of diagnostics and medical treatments are significantly lower, often by 40-80% compared to the same treatments in other EU countries, the United States or Canada. Combine that with world-class facilities, expert medical staff, limited or no waiting lists and rapid access to treatments that might not be available in their resident country, and it’s easy to see why not just expat Poles but around 320,000 international patients in total visited Poland for treatment in 2012.

Advanced Technology specifically to treat Brain Metastases, Tumours and Lesions

Improvements in technology, such as enhanced imaging quality, which have led to more patients being diagnosed with brain abnormalities. These advances in technology have enabled patients to be treated more accurately, safely and successfully. Exira Gamma Knife is a state of the art facility using the latest Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion system, which enables treatment of a wider range of conditions, faster and more efficiently, than ever before.

Exceptional precision without damaging healthy brain tissue

Despite its name, Gamma Knife treatment involves no blade or knife. Often referred to as stereotactic radiosurgery, Gamma Knife is a highly effective, advanced, non-invasive treatment that uses 192 sources of Co-60 radiation to treat the brain metastasis, tumour or lesion. During treatment the beams of gamma radiation focus on the area previously defined by the doctor. Due to the use of collimators and stereotactic head frame, the precision of treatment is exceptional - to within 0.15mm, the thickness of a strand of hair. The therapeutic dose of radiation is enough to effectively treat the planned area, without damaging the surrounding tissues.

Rapid recovery and minimal risk of complications and collateral damage

Gamma Knife is used as an alternative to open brain surgery, which often carries considerable risks of complications and collateral damage.  Full recovery can take months. By contrast, Gamma Knife is generally performed as an outpatient procedure and patients are up and about, and often on their way home, within hours of treatment and resuming normal activities almost immediately.

Successful treatment for a range of brain cancers, tumours and lesions

Gamma Knife has proven effective for patients with many metastastic brain cancers, benign or malignant brain tumours, vascular malformations, or neuralgic pain. Studies show strong treatment success rates, including local control (successful treatment of a specific site) of tumours in any brain location frequently exceeding 85%. Compared to other treatments, Gamma Knife treatment offers a more favourable quality of life before, during and after the procedure.

Highly trained specialist and expert care team delivering treatment to improve patient lives

Our highly trained neurosurgery, radiotherapy, radiology and medical physicist specialist care team at Exira Gamma Knife are dedicated to improving the lives of their patients and committed to delivering the highest quality care. The team, led by Dr Arkadiusz Lech, a specialist in neurosurgery, has trained in the Gamma Knife Unit at La Timone University Hospital in Marseille, France which is led by Professor Jean Regis. The clinic is located in University Centre of Ophthalmology and Oncology of Silesian Medical University, Katowice. To watch a video of Dr Lech explaining how Gamma Knife works, click here.

Dramatic life improvements for patients of all ages following treatment

Since its launch, the Exira Gamma Knife centre has successfully helped to save or improve the lives of more than 100 patients. The clinic treats patients of all ages, including children. In one example, the team effectively treated a 10-year-old girl suffering with hypothalamic hamartoma, which caused multiple seizures per day and was proving difficult to manage with medication. As Dr Lech explains: “Surgery was not a good option for Julia due to the location of the tumour and the high risk of post-operative complications. Due to its absolute precision and non-invasive nature, Gamma Knife was the ideal treatment and it was successfully undertaken in January 2014, in cooperation with Professor Regis.” Within days of treatment, she was back at school and within two months all epileptic seizures had ceased. One year on, she is a healthy child leading a normal life and there have been no side effects.
